I won’t lie to you…last week we had some technical difficulties. But, they’ve all been sorted out and we’re ready to keep rolling with The World’s Smartest Rasslin Talk Show’s Curated Look through the History of Rasslin, aka STRAIGHT SHOOT RETRO. This week’s topic? Starrcade 1984: The Million Dollar Challenge.

Like all of our STRAIGHT SHOOT RETRO topics, you can check out the original event on the WWE Network, and we suggest you do just that before tuning into our live show this Wednesday, March 12 at 9pmET/6pmPT. Co-host Jeff Schiller and I will show up with a stack of notes and some background info for your inquiring minds, but feel free to leave questions and maybe even some nostalgic PRF submissions – we’ll get to them if we have time after all this classic NWA rasslin chitchat!

Straight Shoot is completely free for you to enjoy, but in the face of rising podcast hosting costs, we need your support! Here are three easy ways to do it:

Ways to watch/listen are below. Scroll down for more information on Starrcade 1984.

  • Right here, on this very page, live or after-the-fact, through the embedded YouTube video right up above
  • Over at the official Google Hangout event page, where you can watch live and even ask questions for me and my special guest.
  • On my official YouTube channel, where you can check out the video after the fact and of course SUBSCRIBE.
  • The morning after, via audio-only podcast versions of the show embedded above or on iTunesStitcher and PodOmatic.

Starrcade 1984 was the second-ever Starrcade event, but still took place a good four months before the inaugural WrestleMania, and as such, was still an attempt to halt the inevitable national expansion of Vince McMahon’s WWF. As alluded to throughout Starrcade 1983, NWA mainstay (and booker) Dusty Rhodes was the No. 1 contender for the NWA Championship, and as such, at Starrcade 1984, he challenged champion Ric Flair for the coveted title, with the winner also receiving $1,000,000 (hence: The Million Dollar Challenge).

While the card for Starrcade 1984 still boasts names like Flair, Rhodes, Ricky Steamboat, Wahoo McDaniel, Tully Blanchard and others, the NWA roster is already starting to thin out at this point, with Starrcade 1983 standouts “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Greg “The Hammer” Valentine having recently decamped for New York. Still, the show features Jimmy Valiant, not as Charlie Brown from Outta Town, but as his Boogie Woogie Man gimmick, so it’s safe to say that Jeff and I are both pretty stoked.

Watch the pay-per-view yourself between now and Wednesday, then make sure to join us for STRAIGHT SHOOT RETRO!
